Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were taken to medical facilities.

The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the events before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
