Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. And again, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police issued video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning near MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “In fact, he attends every game. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He signed with Arizona in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
