Manchester United Set to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Signing for United

Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL side.

Her exit from Munich was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.

Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering positive momentum.

Recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought additional business:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
