A prominent South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the metropolis of Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a country grappling with entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the downtown area on Tuesday afternoon.

Officials stated the 40-year-old media personality was confronted by a trio of assailants, with one opened fire on him before escaping on foot.

The purpose of the attack is unknown and no suspects have been apprehended are in custody, as per the official statement.

Details of the Attack

Police said that Stock was targeted as he was departing from a location close to the Carlton Centre.

He had been present for hours at the site overseeing the setup of security systems, which had been illegally inhabited by unidentified individuals, it was reported.

"It is alleged the man was confronted by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before running from the location on foot," authorities stated.

Security camera video showed a man with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what resembled a guard's attire shooting on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ attempted to flee after he was hit but succumbed to his injuries a short distance away.

Police added that Stock had an unused firearm and no items were stolen during the attack.

Crucial forensic evidence, like bullet casings, were recovered from the crime scene.

Appeal for Witnesses

Authorities have requested eyewitnesses who may have witnessed the attack to contact them.

"Evidence suggests they walked a long distance after the shooting, and officers have been attempting to locate them to determine their destination," remarked an authority figure.

His sister, a close relative, expressed the relatives are devastated to process his death.

"I am devastated. I cannot express the pain," she stated.
