Taliban Employed Left-Behind UK Equipment to Find Local Nationals That Served With Allied Troops, Inquiry Is Told

A whistleblower has told an official investigation that British authorities abandoned sensitive technology allowing Afghanistan's rulers to identify Afghans who worked with western forces.

Data Breach Puts Thousands at Risk

The whistleblower, known as Person A, stated that people concerned by the data leak were instructed to change residences and switch their mobile numbers to avoid detection from the ruling authorities.

Lawmakers are investigating the UK government's response of a serious breach of personal details concerning nearly 19,000 individuals who had asked to come to the UK to escape militant rule.

The Information Breach Was Discovered

A spreadsheet containing confidential details, such as identities, addresses and in some cases family information, was mistakenly released by a staff member stationed at UK special forces headquarters in February 2022.

The incident was discovered months later, when identities of nine people who had applied to settle in Britain surfaced on online platforms.

Taliban Capabilities

Many believe there's a misunderstanding that the Taliban are without the same sort of facilities that allied forces use,” Person A informed the committee.

“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; they possess it. Once they acquire a contact number, they are able to track you down to within metres. That is what intelligence groups did.”

Under inquiry about regarding if authorities possessed sophisticated technology, the whistleblower declared: “They possess all resources.”

Consequences of the Information Leak

Initial findings presented to the inquiry indicated that no fewer than forty-nine kin and associates of people concerned by the breach had been murdered.

A legal restriction about the leak was enacted in August 2023 and prevented relevant facts concerning it from being made public until mid-2025.

Protective Actions

Because she was restricted, Person A and the aid group she was working with informed individuals at risk they were supporting that they had “suspicions that somebody's phone had been intercepted”.

“We advised that they change residence when possible and altered their phone numbers. These represented the primary information that, should militant forces had access to this information, would cause them being traced,” Person A explained.

Challenged Assessments

The whistleblower disputed that internal investigation performed by an ex-government employee had been wrong to state that the acquisition of the information by the Taliban was “minimally impact an individual's existing exposure”.

“The crucial point is that these Afghans are not confronting the Taliban; they remain concealed. All concerns relate to former occupations.”

She detailed disturbing abuse suffered by at-risk Afghans, comprising electrocution, simulated drowning, and severe beatings.

“Instances include young kids who have had limbs fractured to pressure households to disclose hiding places,” Person A stated.
