The British driver Lando Norris Claims First Formula One World Championship in Abu Dhabi Despite Max Verstappen's Race Triumph.
In a display of gutsy driving, Lando Norris has won his first F1 world title by taking P3 at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. A podium was enough for the British driver, even though his rival Max Verstappen won the race and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri came home in second.
The driver performed precisely what was needed in an enormously intense race at the Yas Marina Circuit, featuring a series of audacious overtakes, with flawless execution from both the driver and his team.
An Important Achievement for Britain and The Team
By winning his maiden world championship, Norris is now the 11th British driver to achieve this. It concludes the team's title drought, which went back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton was their last champion. Furthermore, it had been 27 years since McLaren last secured the drivers’ and constructors’ double back in 1998.
This marks a remarkable revival for the team, from a low point in the middle of the last decade when they twice finished ninth in the standings. This resurgence has been led by boss Zak Brown and, most recently, by Andrea Stella, who has delivered an well-drilled team with a race-winning car.

A Tale of Two Teammates
For the Australian Oscar Piastri, who had led the championship for much of the campaign, there was clear disappointment at stumbling in the closing stages. A series of difficult weekends and mistakes, including a crash in Baku, were expensive. However, he finishes the season having demonstrated he is too world champion material. To have been so fast in only his third season in F1, with seven wins, remains a huge achievement.
Verstappen was also brilliant to take the fight down to the last race. The Dutchman did everything possible in Abu Dhabi with the win, but after fighting back from a 104-point deficit mid-season, he fell just short of having the points to overhaul Norris, ending up just two points short.
Sealing the Deal with Ruthless Precision
Norris closed out his title with ruthless focus to win the crown that had been within reach but remained just out of grasp as McLaren found themselves floundering at the last two rounds. First a double disqualification in Las Vegas and then an questionable tactical decision in Qatar.
This represents no little achievement for the driver in his seventh season in F1, all of them with McLaren. He remained loyal to the team even during tough times, believing they would return to the top. That faith was rewarded in Abu Dhabi.
Norris performed a hugely impressive job to stick at his goal, maintaining his cool and belief during periods under the cosh. Having lost the championship lead to Piastri after Saudi Arabia, he nonetheless worked at getting the most from the car's potential.

The Decisive Grand Prix
In the race, Verstappen kept his lead through turn one, but the main contenders avoided contact. Piastri, using the hard tyre, was feisty and made a spectacular move to go round the outside of Norris to claim second place.
This demonstrated the McLarens were free to race, but put Norris under threat from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Early pit visits saw Norris emerge in traffic, but he passed rivals within a lap and showed great composure in his race craft.
On lap 19, he made an incredibly bold move to dive past two cars at once, climbing to fourth and closing on Verstappen's teammate. The rival team told their driver to hold up Norris, leading to a breathtaking assault where Norris burst up the inside line, almost leaving the track.
The incident was looked at by the stewards, with a few nerve-wracking laps passing before a time penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris was decided. This bold move without being held up was crucial to his title fight.
Diverging Fates
While Norris was crowned the first Briton to win the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the difference in fortunes between the two was stark. As the young guns battled over the title, Hamilton, the veteran, could only finish eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a dismal conclusion to a difficult season with Ferrari.
Making his debut with the Italian team had been greeted with enthusiasm but has yielded what was easily his most challenging year ever, finishing sixth in the championship and failing to secure a podium. He has looked weary in the final rounds and will aim to rebuild over the winter.
