The Lions of Teranga's Rising Talent Lamine Camara: From Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.
When I walk into the room, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he clings to throughout the conversation. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His resolve and natural ability won over teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the hardest person to convince was not a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his path in the sport. Another challenge was his small stature, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a deal.
However, Génération Foot – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “astonished” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Year and European Arrival
That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his country to victory and earning player of the tournament.
Soon after, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” says the 21-year-old. He has lived alone in Europe, a situation his relatives support to maintain his concentration.
Influences and Playing Style
Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and precision from set pieces are key strengths. He admits a need to control his aggression, after being sent off early in his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.
Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals
At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.
Right now, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
On a potential transfer to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's frequently ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize in the future.
“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”
Looking ahead, this talented midfielder blends a modest start, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
