The network's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network launched a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about watching this lovable family navigate their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
