The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami Dade County Leader.
While perhaps not at the same level as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a current administration.
“Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a first responder, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “6-7” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The craze became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A New Life
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the character of Miami: joyful, diverse, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Annually, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they marked the pig's pardon.
