The Showrunner Reveals He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Might Finish... For Now.

Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed series reaching its finale—and Season 2 already in development—the creative team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.

On the Tremendous Fan Response

It would be easy to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and fan theories regarding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to ignore the noise.

“It's like being an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's amazing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by what people are saying.”

“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.

The Central Mystery: Has the creator Know the Finale of Pluribus?

So if the creative staff aren't taking cues by audience theories, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… in a way.

“We've developed some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” he states. “yet we stand ready to discard a good idea for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Alternatively, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.

“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Then again, one could always use the iconic TV endings?

“My dream is Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
