Venus Williams, Awarded Wild Card for First Australian Open in Half a Decade.
A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.
Historic Return to the Australian Courts
Tournament officials confirmed on Friday that the forty-five-year-old legend will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the second round before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.
Preparing for the Australian Summer
Venus had previously revealed in the month of November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, two weeks prior to the Australian Open. The Australian Open noted that Williams is scheduled to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, just before the start of play at Melbourne Park.
Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two occasions, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will represent the 22nd time she has appeared in the main draw.

Officials indicated that Williams is poised to be the oldest woman to compete in an Open's main draw, surpassing the record previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
