When We See the Decline of the Movement of Bazball, Let’s Appreciate What It Created.
The Journey of a Cult can be marked by specific steps.
1. The Big Idea
A charismatic leader or leaders introduce a new and transcendent idea pledging a panacea for disconnected individuals.
And so it goes. Plans are in motion to storm the compound overseas. The gunships are circling. Conflict emerges from the sidelines. One individual, naked, anxious, the slogan POSITIVE INTENT written on his body in chicken blood, has stumbled from the field and is taken aside under a blanket for a temporary assignment at Derbyshire.
Remember the early days, when the world was still young? The era of early Bazball, of uninhibited aggression.
2. Love-Bombing
Team architects guarantee a new start, optimism ahead, love, redemption together with shared faith in the philosophy.
What was this thing initially? Just men on a balcony enjoying success. Ink. Forearms. Determination. Confident masculinity. Admittedly, England’s players will claim Bazball doesn’t actually exist, which is funny as it’s denied, what exactly did I just watch?
Yet it’s clear its essence. It’s the player attempting a move so depraved it defies description. It’s the thrill of Ben Stokes at his peak, a demeanor suggesting: pensive Nordic god, rugged appearance, hair woven from beaver hide, truly contemporary you half-expect to notice and notice he’s fielding on the ground stripped to the waist and cradling a wild salmon.
It’s the batsman often seen addressing the media, resembling a happy little woodland creature formally attired, expressing thoughts like we’re challenging norms. Indeed, the energy, for a significant period, was only good energy.
3. Expansion Period
Development stage. Togetherness strengthened by rote learning of the cult’s slogans. These principles can appear contradictory to prove commitment.
Is it just me? The backlash, the fury, the sense of betrayal following the initial loss feels overblown, too much. The batting collapsed on the field, as is typical there. They were torn apart in the field during a brief period when tactics failed, outplayed by Travis Head playing aggressively but smarter, adaptive to conditions, an athlete shining with aura.
And now we have this the attacks, the anger, the perception of the team as a kind of abomination. The feeling seems to be that losing isn’t enough, they need to lose righteously, to be cleansed, destroyed, overwhelmed through sheer skill of the bowler’s action, the conventional tactics of the veteran, marking successes humbly like he’s just been given a nice new fishing rod. What will this do to them?
4. The Backlash Phase
Problems arise from failures in the plan. But the cult cannot admit errors. It begins to thrive on hostility externally.
Ultimately, half a week out the next match, we’ve entered an intriguing moment in the lifespan of this approach. Victory is possible in the next Test in a blur of adrenal disruption. Probably, failure may follow. Should they fail it appears we may see the final stage.
Before that happens, a couple of points worth saying regarding this. More than two years ago, back in those heady early days, of optimism and energy, a column appeared labeling it a movement. There was outrage, which demonstrated because everyone knows how to confirm something definitely isn’t a cult is if supporters send hundreds of furiously one-eyed messages rejecting criticism of its truths.
Recent events recently are fascinating. Criticism of the approach has now become the cult. Social media is furious, disappointed commentators, shots of angry middle-aged supporters abroad missing out on play, similar to timeshare owners seeking justice.
On the other hand, we have the wider backdrop of the host’s complex more culturally hard-wired exasperation at these weirdly passive-aggressive buccaneers, claiming, the methods you value and have fostered and nurtured as part of your identity from others, it’s just a joke in the end old boy.
And this is the real point. Everything is a cult. The approach was a phenomenon since the sport itself is insular. Or rather, the team has long been exclusive, a clique, a garden party, an insular community with two hundred years of ceremonial past behind it. This has always been a place where power and access are hoarded. It’s the colonial game of the nation, the early image-makers. And surprisingly, the nation has its own culture, a series of esoteric hierarchies, a monarchy still exists.
The players have been sealed up within this world from a young age. In trying to escape from it, to foster positivity, they are mirroring their past, building another enclosure, a limited community, but now with a modern squad and a coach promoting authenticity if you fit the mold.
Live where your feet are. Confront risks. However much you change, you remain stuck.
Reflecting on this, it is perhaps the moment to offer compassion for the approach, to acknowledge its merits, of which there are many. How to define it? Promoting liberation. Challenging orthodoxies. Batting aggressively|Attacking with
