Zohran Mamdani affirms he will make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point during his run for office.
A Historic Residence
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors after the World War II era.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core issue, was not quick to announce this decision immediately following his electoral win in November.
"The choice came down to our family's safety and the importance of dedicating my full attention on implementing the platform on affordability New Yorkers elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
Leaving Astoria
He resided in Astoria, Queens, an area known for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for exemplifying what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, it will always live within me and the work I do," he added.
Political Debate
In his election campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
Yet his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the apartment although he hails from a well-known family.
A House Not Always Used
Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a space for civic gatherings, and championed an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings far removed from his previous Astoria home.
With its butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.
Inside, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The compound, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also has enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, meaning the city imposes caps on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the price of rent outpaces the average income.
Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
